New Building Update #2 – Drop Off Of Food & Other Items

Reminder from the DVD Student and Family Handbook:

Drop Off Of Food & Other Items In New Building

Hello parents, a reminder from our handbook on our policies related to dropping items off for students once school has started. These board approved policies are in place to ensure the safety of our students and safeguard the effective use of staff time for teaching and instruction.

Dropping Off Belongings for Students During School Hours

Items dropped off for students will not be delivered to the classrooms, and students will not be called out from class or notified by the school to pick up items that are brought in. Items should be left on the drop-off table on the first floor and labeled with the student’s name. Students can pick up these items during lunch time or after school. The school is not responsible for any items left on the drop-off table.

Ordering Food for Delivery

Students are not permitted to order any food to be delivered to the school at any time, whether during school hours or before/after school hours. Any food delivered to the school must be ordered and received by a staff member. Parents or guardians are also not permitted to order food to be delivered to the school for students. If a parent or guardian would like to drop off food for a student, the drop-off procedures must be followed above.

New Building Post #1 — Wheeled Devices, Parent Access

Designers, each day we will be providing information regarding the move to the new campus on the blog.  Today’s post covers skateboards/bikes/scooters, as well as parent and community member access to the building.

Info for Skateboards/Bikes/Scooters

No skateboards, bikes, scooters, etc. will be allowed in the new high school building. Students who ride them to school will have a place outside to lock them up, but if they do not have a lock they should go buy one before the first day in the new building. We can’t guarantee the safety of their boards & bikes if they don’t lock them up. We will not allow them to bring their skateboards, bikes, or scooters into the building for safety reasons, even if they don’t have a lock.

You can find information about the new building Grand Opening Celebration on Dec 9th here. DVD parents can of course also see the new building at the DVD exhibition night on Thursday, November 16th starting at 6 pm. For those of you who are new to Da Vinci, Exhibition night is an evening event where students get to show off the work and projects they have done throughout the semester. We love to have every parent attend! Please note that parents are not allowed to follow students into the building on the first day for students Nov 8th, for safety reasons.

Week 11 Update

Designers – next week is Spirit Week, as well as our last week on this campus!  We are so excited to get into the new building on Wednesday, November 8th.

Remember, there are 3 PD days allotted to moving in where students have no class – November 3, 6 and 7. Only Da Vinci staff members are permitted at the new campus on these days. During the relocation, we ask students, families and community members to remain off all campuses unless authorized to be there by a school administrator.

Families, information regarding new campus drop-off, parking, 11/8 bell schedule and more will be sent out next week.

Spirit Week Themes per Day

  • Monday 10/30: Twin Day
  • Tuesday 10/31: Halloween
  • Wednesday 11/1: Pajama Day
  • Thursday 11/2: Sci-fi Day

Please note – no masks, weapons or weapon-like objects are permitted on campus on these days. Dress code will still be enforced.

Warning: Potential Cal Grant Phone Call Scam

Dear Families,

It has been brought to our attention that a student was notified via phone that they were awarded a Cal Grant. The student was directed to call another number and provide more information. Please note that this is NOT how the Cal Grant Awards are distributed to students. If you have any questions, please review the information provided from the California Student Aid Commission website:

“If you qualify [for a Cal Grant], you’ll receive an email or letter notification to complete the online Cal Grant C Supplement in Web Grants for Students by the deadline. Even though a GPA is not required to apply for a Cal Grant C, you’re still encouraged to submit yours because it can only help your chances of receiving an award.”

Volunteers Needed for Traffic at New Campus!

DV parents, we are looking for volunteers to ensure student safety in the arrival to and departure from the new campus as they navigate their new walk/commute to 201 N. Douglas for the first month or so.

We are in need of morning (8:20-9:00) and afternoon (3:30-4:10) volunteers. You are welcome to sign up for one or both as your availability allows. Optimally, you would be available daily for the time slot.

Please sign up below if you are interested in volunteering and indicate your availability:

SIGN UP TO BE A TRAFFIC AND SAFETY VOLUNTEER

Once we have information from all interested parties, you will be contacted regarding a meeting to review expectations and procedures. This will be held on Monday 11/6 from 3:00-4:00 pm.

What is my purpose/task as a volunteer?

  • Receive a vest from DV staff prior to the shift, and return it at the end
  • Report to crosswalk corners at El Segundo and Douglas (NW, NE, SE)
  • Help students in making sure that crosswalk button is pressed and that all are aware of surrounding traffic
  • Help students watch for drivers making right-turns
  • Help students avoid jaywalking
  • Help with students in need of assistance

Week 10 Update

Hello, Designers! By now, many of you have probably heard the news that we are moving in November to our new site – check out this post from earlier today for more details.

9th graders –  don’t forget about your field trip on Friday 10/27. Make sure your permission slips get signed ahead of time.

Parking Permit Reminder

  • Thank you to the students who have already submitted a parking permit application.
  • If you drive to school, but have not applied yet, please make sure to pick up a form in the front office and turn it into the Principal’s office as soon as possible
  • There are a limited number of spots!

Announcement: Move to the New Building

Designers, we are thrilled to announce that we will be moving into the new building located at 201 N. Douglas St. in just a few short weeks!  There will be more details in the coming weeks for drop-off, pick up, etc.

A message with details from our CEO, Dr. Matt Wunder, can be found at the Da Vinci Schools website, or you can access it directly by clicking HERE. It is available in both English and Spanish.

What do I need to know?

To ensure a smooth transition, the Da Vinci Schools Board of Trustees has approved a modification to the academic calendar to create a 5-day window for packing, moving, and reconfiguring technology. Details below:

  •  We will be adding two professional development days (Nov. 6 and 7) to our schedule. Nov. 3 was previously scheduled as a PD Day (no school for students).
  • The last day of classes at the current campuses for DVC, DVD and DVS will be Nov. 2.
  • Students will begin at the new campus on Wednesday, November 8th.

We ask that all students, families and community members please remain off of all campuses (old or new) during the transition unless specifically authorized to be there.

To celebrate our new beginning in this amazing new facility, there will be a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. Students, families and community members are invited to attend the opening celebration of Phase 1 of construction. (Phase 2: pool, gym and soccer field is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2018.)
