Exhibition Week Wrap Up and End Of Semester Schedules (Happy November Break!)

Greetings Designers and Design Families!

What a great week at Design! Congratulations to our 10th and 12th grade for a fantastic Fall Exhibition on Tuesday night. We are so proud of our students and teachers for displaying such amazing work. And thank you to all of our families, friends, alumni and community members for showing up in support – it is the presence of our school community members that make these Exhibitions so special! See below for pictures from Exhibition Night!

Friday 11/18 was packed full of fun activities before break! Shout out to our Alumni Coordinator Pam Baker for coordinating our first ever Alumni Sibling day. It was such a pleasure welcoming graduates back to be on campus and to share their post-secondary experiences with DVD students. Also, our 12th graders went on the annual Downtown LA field trip, and had a chance to bond as a class while getting to explore the culture of downtown. And finally, our 9th grade Fundamentals of Design honors students got a chance to go on a Real World Learning field trip to local architecture firm RIOS with their teacher Mrs. Ryan! See photos from the 9th grade field trip below!

Last but not certainly not least: I want extend a BIG THANK YOU to all of the DVD families who made contributions to our DVD staff gratitude baskets; thanks to all of you for donating time, treats, and messages of gratitude to our staff to help send them off on a much deserved break with a little something to let them know how appreciated they are. We love our DVD families! And, we wish all of you a restful, safe, and fun holiday break!

National Portfolio Day

Designers,
It’s time to show off what you’ve been doing for the past few years! National Portfolio Days are annual events typically held in multiple locations across the United States, Canada and Europe.

Visit with counselors, admissions team members, and faculty from art and design schools for a review of your portfolio before applying to colleges or universities.

Meet one on one with professional representatives of accredited colleges and universities and receive valuable feedback and guidance on your portfolio prior to submitting your application. No admission decisions or scholarship awards will be offered at National Portfolio Days. Some college and university representatives may accept your portfolio as the visual portion of your application. Others have restrictions that prohibit them from making a definitive portfolio decision at the time of your review.

If there is a particular school you are hoping to meet with, please visit that school’s website to learn more about the dates they will be available.

Staff Appreciation

Dear DVD Students, Parents, and Guardians,

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, we are all grateful for the tremendous work of our school staff – from our teachers to counselors to paraeducators to custodians to front office staff. To show our appreciation, we are organizing Thanksgiving baskets to deliver to our school staff on Thursday, November 17th. The idea is that each staff member will receive one basket containing treats and words of appreciation from students and parents/guardians.

Here is how you can contribute to the baskets of Thanksgiving:

  1. Items: If you are interested and able to purchase something to show your appreciation, please consider non-perishable items such as: individually wrapped : popcorn, gummies, trail mix, chips, hot chocolate, pretzels, candy, cookies, gift cards ($5) to target, Starbucks, coffee, sparkling water, tea, and any other non-perishable snacks. We need donated items collected by: Wednesday November 16th. All items can be left on the first-floor front office.

  1. Words of Appreciation: There is nothing that means more to school staff than words of appreciation or encouragement. Please consider handwriting a note of thanks or typing one digitally here: DVD Staff Appreciation Notes We will be printing these digital messages and including all words of appreciation in the baskets. Handwritten notes can be dropped off by Wednesday November 16th.

With gratitude for your ongoing encouragement and support,

The event was hosted on the LAX tarmac, where students not only engaged with employers in a range of fields, but got to tour different aircraft and even sit in first class. See photos from the event below!
