Student Led Conferences Next Week!

Greetings Designers and Design Families,

We are getting ready for Student Led Conferences (aka: SLCs) next week! SLCs are an important time when parents and teachers come together for a meeting led by the student. It is a time to highlight a student’s strengths and hard work, to encourage students to set new goals, and to ask guiding questions so students can take ownership of their learning.

Every student and parent is expected to participate in leading an SLC this semester. SLCs will happen in-person and on campus unless a Zoom meeting is requested. See below for SLC schedules and details.

Reminder: We have minimum days Mon-Thurs (3/13-3/16) next week. Students will be released at 1:45pm. Friday (3/17) will be a staff development day and classes will not be in session.

Student Led Conferences (SLCs) are happening in-person at the DVD campus from March 13th-16th (Week 27).

  • Week 27 (3/13 – 3/16): Student Led Conferences (minimum days)
  • Friday, March 17th: NO SCHOOL – Staff Development
  • Tuesday, March 28th: 5:30pm-7:30pm: Exhibition Night! (9th, 10th and 11th grade)
  • Friday, March 31st: NO SCHOOL – Cesar Chavez Holiday
  • April 3rd – April 7th: NO SCHOOL – Spring Break!
  • April 10th: School resumes!

Announcements From Real World Learning Director (2.27.2023)

For students interested in exploring cyber security and IT: 

Join the IT Academy Powered by Microsoft! LA-Tech.org has partnered with Microsoft to bring you this incredible opportunity to get PAID while learning, earning certifications, and working with amazing companies like Microsoft. This program is 12 weeks and requires a commitment of 10 to 15 hours a week. You will be required to attend zoom sessions every Tuesday and Thursday with the majority of sessions starting at 4 pm. The priority deadline is Sunday, April 2, 2023. To apply, please click here. 

For students interested in business and technology: 

The Fika Tech Career Academy starts in the Fall of 2023. Students will have the opportunity to learn from companies such as Roblox, Snapchat Inc, Facebook, and more. This is a paid opportunity that allows students to build their portfolios with industry-driven projects. Students must be committed to joining virtual sessions every week and comfortable with independent work. The deadline to apply is July 6, 2023. To apply, please click here. 

The Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship (KKCF) is cofounded by Hip Hop Artist French Montana and supports youth interested in STEM. Through a 12-month fellowship program, Fellows will complete 80 hours of summer curriculum to prepare them for college, the future of work, and STEM careers, while participating in monthly career workshops throughout the academic year. During the summer months, Fellows will participate in six weeks of summer instruction, then receive monthly career coaching sessions and workshops. Fellows will use industry-standard technologies to learn how to create a brand, understand selling, create a proper wireframe, basic HTML & CSS coding, and more. To learn more, please click here. Week 25 Preview

Greetings Designers and Design Families,

This week, for our campus highlight, we are celebrating the incredible mural work done by our designers that is currently featured in the center atrium. A new semi-permanent installation in the atrium is a credit to our Ethnic Studies class. The murals were hand painted by our DVD Seniors and presented for their POLs last semester, and represent varied and diverse stories of cultural representation and finding joy in overcoming oppression. Our current installation in the glass display case was produced by our Black Student Union in commemoration of Black History Month. We are so proud of our DVD artists and achieving such beautiful, meaningful artwork.
