Spring Break

Greetings DVD Community,

We would like to acknowledge our teachers, staff, students, and parents who are demonstrating extraordinary creativity, patience, and flexibility as we continue with our virtual instruction program. This is a new experience and as a community, we are working together to strengthen our program and provide high-quality instruction for our students. I am incredibly impressed and proud of how our community has come together to find solutions throughout this unpreceded situation.

Next week, we will be on Spring Break! During this week, staff will not be conducting classes or responding to messages. On Monday 4/13 and Tuesday 4/14, our staff will be participating in Professional Development. Virtual instruction will resume on Wednesday, April 15th.

As noted in an earlier update, our physical school campuses will remain closed and virtual instruction will continue for all of our students through the end of the 2019-20 school year. We understand there are many questions left unanswered and many details are still to be worked out. When we return from spring break, we will provide additional information about grading, graduations, senior activities, and more. Rest assured, we are committed to holding promotion and graduation ceremonies on campus/in person when it is safe to do so.

Please remember that although our doors are physically closed, we are here to support you. We need to keep our lines of communication and collaboration open so that our students are supported academically and emotionally. Summer Internship Update

Hello Students and Families,

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unfortunately putting the summer internship timeline on hold until we learn more (this does not include the Boeing internship application, which is already underway).  We will use this additional time to connect with our internship host organizations and learn more about the trajectory of the “Safer at Home” order for Los Angeles.

Given this challenge, we are exploring ways to provide virtual internships, mentorship, and/or career development this summer. We will keep you posted as we learn more.  In the meantime, if you would like to still develop your career readiness, here are a few ideas:

Week 29 and Code of Conduct

Dear DVD Community,

First and foremost, we hope that you are all healthy and well. Thank you again for your patience and support over these past two weeks. We will continue with our current Virtual Instruction schedule for Week 29.

As our classroom environment has transitioned for the time being to virtual (online) instruction as a result of the COVID-19 related safety requirements, it is expected that students meet the same standards of behavior as though we were on a physical campus together. In other words, our DVD virtual classrooms are real classrooms with real teachers, and appropriate student behavior is expected. To ensure that all of our students understand how appropriate behavior is defined for an online environment, we have developed a code of conduct that all students are required to follow. This code of conduct addresses student integrity, accountability for individual action, interaction with other DVD students, and interaction with DVD staff. Please click here to review the DVD Student Code of Conduct for Virtual Instruction. The intent is that it will allow our students and staff to interact online in a safe and courteous manner.

Communication and Technology during School Closure

During this time, our staff and teachers will be communicating with families more frequently via email. Please take a few moments to login to SchoolMint and review your account to ensure that we have the most current email address(es) and phone number(s) for your family. If you need help accessing your login info for SchoolMint, please contact Maria Beltran (mbeltran@davincischools.org) or Irma Rodriguez (irodriguez@davincischools.org).

For those who do not have a device at home for virtual learning, we will be open again this Wednesday (3/25) from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. to pick-up a school-issued Chromebook. Tech pick-up for all six Da Vinci Schools will take place at the 201 N. Douglas St. campus. (DVC, DVD, DVS students may pick up on their school floor; DV Connect, RISE and DVX, please pick-up in the multi-purpose room). If students need help accessing Google Classrooms and/or other programs on their school-issued Chromebooks, they may email our IT team at studentsupport@davincischools.org.

As we move forward with Virtual Instruction at DVD, it is important to remember that our goal is to continue providing high-quality instruction and new content that is meaningful and effective, while also addressing the need for asynchronous learning and flexibility. Students are expected to submit assignments and demonstrate mastery of the content. If you have questions regarding content and/or assignments, please contact your student’s teacher.

Yearbook Update and Request

Hello!

I hope this email finds you well.  This is Mr. White, the Da Vinci Design Yearbook adviser, and I’m sending this to make a special request.
Obviously, there have been a lot of changes going on in our lives over the past few weeks due to our nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  One direct impact is that teachers have now had to move learning online, and students have had to turn spaces at home into their classrooms.
Rest assured that the 2019-2020 DVD yearbook will still be published; we are almost finished with it, in fact, and would like to add one more page that features the online / virtual / distance learning that is going on in your homes.
If you would like to share a picture with us of your student’s home learning environment , whether it’s at a kitchen table or in front of a computer, that picture could be featured in this year’s yearbook.
If you’re interested in helping us with this page, just go to this website:  hjeshare.com
Once there, you will be asked for a school code; our code is HJ17693 (the HJ must be capitalized.  Once you’re logged in, just follow the prompts for submitting a picture.  Ask your student for help with this; you can even do it on your phone!
There’s one catch:  we need these pictures TODAY (or really yesterday, if not sooner)!  Or As Soon As Possible!  This page is a last minute addition to the yearbook, so if it’s going to happen we need pictures to flood in as soon as you read this email.
If you’re interested, there are still yearbooks available for pre-order.  Just go to yearbookordercenter.com and enter our school code (17693) and you can pre-order your copy today.  The yearbooks will be delivered in May, before the end of the school year.

Week 28: New Virtual Instruction Schedule

Hello DVD families,

Thank you to our parents, students, and staff for completing our survey and providing feedback. Based on this, we have made some adjustments to our schedule for the upcoming week. Please make note of the following changes:

  • School goes from 9:30am until 1:30pm (Monday through Thursday).
  • On Friday, students are expected to do a virtual check-in with their advisory teacher at 10am. The rest of the day is available for independent student work time.
  • Office hours will occur at the time of the regularly scheduled class, so there is no separate time for office hours.

DVD Virtual Instruction Parent/Guardian Survey

Dear DVD families,

First off, we want you to know we are wishing all families health, wellness, and safety during this time. We are grateful for our Da Vinci families and our intent is to continue to be of service in the best way possible for our students and families.

We are on Day 4 of Virtual Instruction, and we acknowledge that it has been an adjustment for everyone, including students, staff, and parents. Thank you for your patience as we continue to learn and figure this out together. Please know that staff has been in communication and working hard to ensure our students are still receiving quality education at this time and that their learning and overall well-being are being considered in every discussion and decision. With that said, we would appreciate your feedback on how virtual instruction has been going for your student. If you could please fill out this Virtual Instruction Parent Survey linked here, we would greatly value your feedback and thoughts. (We are also gathering students’ feedback via a survey that is being posted to their class Google Classrooms.)

DVD COVID-19 Update 3-15-20

Dear DVD Community,

First and foremost, thank you for your patience, support, and understanding over these past few days. The safety and health of our students and staff is our priority. As we move towards Virtual Instruction this week, we would like to share some important information regarding student learning and support services.

Virtual Instruction: Students can expect to receive class assignments and information on what they can work on remotely over the course of the week on Google Classrooms beginning on Monday, March 16th. Teachers will be available during their regularly scheduled periods to provide online support for students (see schedule below). Teachers will also provide digital office hours (via Google Meet or Zoom) in which they will be available for students. These times will be communicated by classroom teachers.

Technology: Our campus will be open on Monday, March 16th to students only for the purpose of picking up school-issued Chromebooks between the hours of 10am – 12pm, on the 4th floor. Please understand for the wellness of all, this is not a time for meetings and/or socializing.  

Food Services: Students may pick up a “grab-and-go”  breakfast from 8 am – 9am and one lunch meal between 12 pm – 1:30 pm at Da Vinci Schools Multipurpose Room. We ask that students consume these meals off campus. Meal service will continue until the school is reopened.  If you have any questions, please contact Sara Deulofeu at sdeulofeu@davincischools.org

Support Services:

  • Student medications may be picked up between hours of 10 am and 12 pm on Monday, March 16th.
  • IEP meetings will take place via Google Meet.
  •  Service providers (Speech, Occupational Therapist, Counselor, etc.) will continue through a consultative model via email and other online formats to provide support and activities per IEP goals.

We appreciate your support during this unprecedented time. Our team is committed to serving and supporting our students. As a reminder, email is the best form of communication. Please be patient as we do our best to respond to you in a timely manner.

Estimada comunidad de DVD:

Ante todo, gracias por su paciencia, apoyo y comprensión durante estos últimos días. La seguridad y la salud de nuestros estudiantes y personal es nuestra prioridad. A medida que avanzamos hacia la Instrucción Virtual esta semana, nos gustaría compartir información importante sobre el aprendizaje de los estudiantes y los servicios de apoyo.

Instrucción virtual: los estudiantes pueden esperar recibir tareas de clase e información sobre en qué pueden trabajar de forma remota durante el transcurso de la semana en Google Classrooms a partir del lunes 16 de Marzo.  Los maestros estarán disponibles durante sus períodos programados regularmente para brindar apoyo en línea a los estudiantes (ver el horario a continuación). School Closure

Free Internet Services for Students

Charter Communications, Spectrum’s parent company, announced Friday that beginning March 16, it will make its services available for free for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who don’t already have internet through the company.

Charter said it would partner with school districts to ensure local communities are aware of its tools to help students learn remotely.

It also said it would open its WiFi hotspots for public use.

To enroll in the program, call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.

Online Instruction beginning Monday, March 16

Dear DVD families,

We will be moving towards online instruction, beginning Monday, March 16th. Below is the virtual instruction schedule, which tells you the times you when your teachers will be available for virtual instruction and online support during the time our campus is closed. Please check Google Classroom for each class for assignment details and information. Counselors will be available to students during their normal school hours.
