DVD COVID-19 Update 3-15-20

Dear DVD Community,

First and foremost, thank you for your patience, support, and understanding over these past few days. The safety and health of our students and staff is our priority. As we move towards Virtual Instruction this week, we would like to share some important information regarding student learning and support services.

Virtual Instruction: Students can expect to receive class assignments and information on what they can work on remotely over the course of the week on Google Classrooms beginning on Monday, March 16th. Teachers will be available during their regularly scheduled periods to provide online support for students (see schedule below). Teachers will also provide digital office hours (via Google Meet or Zoom) in which they will be available for students. These times will be communicated by classroom teachers.

Technology: Our campus will be open on Monday, March 16th to students only for the purpose of picking up school-issued Chromebooks between the hours of 10am – 12pm, on the 4th floor. Please understand for the wellness of all, this is not a time for meetings and/or socializing.

Food Services: Students may pick up a “grab-and-go”  breakfast from 8 am – 9am and one lunch meal between 12 pm – 1:30 pm at Da Vinci Schools Multipurpose Room. We ask that students consume these meals off campus. Meal service will continue until the school is reopened.  If you have any questions, please contact Sara Deulofeu at sdeulofeu@davincischools.org

Support Services:

  • Student medications may be picked up between hours of 10 am and 12 pm on Monday, March 16th.
  • IEP meetings will take place via Google Meet.
  •  Service providers (Speech, Occupational Therapist, Counselor, etc.) will continue through a consultative model via email and other online formats to provide support and activities per IEP goals.

We appreciate your support during this unprecedented time. Our team is committed to serving and supporting our students. As a reminder, email is the best form of communication. Please be patient as we do our best to respond to you in a timely manner.

Sincerely,

Veronica Rodriguez

Family Time to Talk – Mental Health and COVID19

Concern over this new virus can make children and families anxious. Acknowledging some level of concern, without panicking, is appropriate and can result in taking actions that reduce the risk of illness. Helping children cope with anxiety requires providing accurate prevention information and facts without causing undue alarm.

It is very important to remember that children look to adults for guidance on how to react to stressful events. If parents seem overly worried, children’s anxiety may rise. Parents should reassure children that health and school officials are working hard to ensure that people throughout the country stay healthy.

You know your children best. Let their questions be your guide as to how much information to provide. However, don’t avoid giving them the information that health experts identify as critical to ensuring your children’s health. Be patient; children and youth do not always talk about their concerns readily. Watch for clues that they may want to talk, such as hovering around while you do the dishes or yard work. It is very typical for younger children to ask a few questions, return to playing, then come back to ask more questions.

When sharing information, it is important to make sure to provide facts without promoting a high level of stress, remind children that adults are working to address this concern, and give children actions they can take to protect themselves.

Here are some specific guidelines:

  1. Go into a proactive mode about managing mental health and well being.
  2. The brain is a big part of our health – if we take care of our stress, mental health and well-being this will help to boost your immune system.
  3. Social distancing does not mean isolation.
  4. Check in with your loved ones and listen to their concerns.
  5. Let your children talk about their feelings and help reframe their concerns into the appropriate perspective.
  6. Children may need extra attention from you in order to talk about their concerns, fears, and questions. It is important that they know they have someone who will listen to them; please make time for them.
  7. It is important to avoid stereotyping any one group of people as responsible for the virus.
  8. Limit television viewing or access to information on the Internet and through social media. Try to avoid watching or listening to information that might be upsetting when your children are present. Engage your child in games or other interesting activities instead.
  9. Keep to a regular schedule (as much as possible), as this can be reassuring and promotes physical health.
  10. Encourage your children to keep up with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but don’t push them if they seem overwhelmed.

Most importantly:

Tell your children you love them and give them plenty of affection.

FREE Practice SAT/ACT test online

Hello Designers,

While we are working virtually, please take advantage of a FREE online SAT or ACT practice test offered by The Princeton Review and COMPASS Education Group.  It’s specifically important for Jrs to practice now to prepare for the upcoming tests for college admissions and it’s never too early for 9th and 10th graders to begin practicing.  This will allow all students to get a feel for each test in order to make better decisions on which test works best for you.  Practice makes perfect!

Virtual Counseling While off Campus

Hello Designers,

Counselors are prepared for a “virtual” week of counseling support next week. Counselors will maintain an online presence Monday – Friday from 8:50am to 3:55pm via Google Meets. Students wanting to participate in drop-in counseling via Google Meets should email your counselor with a request for a private meeting. Your counselor will then send you a private Google Meet link. Students who have regularly scheduled meetings with their counselors will be contacted by their counselors directly. Coronavirus Update: March 13, 2020

Dear Da Vinci Families and Staff,

As we continue to monitor the emerging Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Da Vinci Schools and the Wiseburn Unified School District are taking proactive measures to support the health of our immediate community and the Greater Los Angeles area. After careful deliberation and in close contact with local health officials, beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, all Da Vinci schools will be closed to students for at least one week. Curriculum will be delivered via a virtual delivery model and other means of home study. Additional guidance about returning to campus will be provided on or before March 20, 2020.

Right now, we know nearly all districts in L.A. County have suspended their regular instructional programs and are offering online instruction. Da Vinci and Wiseburn administration have partnered on the decision to dismiss students in the hope that these extreme efforts at social distancing will support containment efforts.

Importantly, there are no known cases of Coronavirus on any Da Vinci or Wiseburn campus at this time.

Our dedicated staff have been working collaboratively over the past week to create online educational and alternate learning plans that all students will be able to access while the move to virtual learning takes place. Students and families will receive separate communication from your child’s school leader and/or teacher(s) with information on how to access these materials. Special education teachers and counselors will provide remote supports so students may access curriculum. Please communicate with your school leader for support, if needed. Given our exceptional talent and how we already leverage technology in our instructional program, we are confident in our ability to continue to offer an outstanding program.

Food Service
We understand that moving to a home-based instructional model will be a hardship for many of our students and families who depend on free and reduced-cost meals that students get at school. We expect that a “grab-and-go” system will be implemented with pick-up location(s) to be finalized and communicated in the near future.

Events
All internal and external events, activities and meetings have been canceled, including athletic games and practices.

Next Steps
We appreciate your understanding, patience and partnership during these ever-evolving times. Together, we will navigate with grace to overcome the challenges we face now and ahead.

Please keep referring to our Coronavirus Updates webpage on the main Da Vinci Schools website. This page is being updated regularly. As a reminder, we will send out another update on or before Friday, March 20 with information about returning to campus.

With gratitude,

Matthew Wunder, Ed.D.
Chief Executive Officer

Update on COVID-19

Hello DVD families,

There are no known cases of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in our school community at this time. However, as a preventive measure and based on the guidance of the California Department of Public Health, we will be canceling all public school events effective, March 12. We believe that this is the best course of action to take given the present circumstances.

This decision covers all events and gatherings, including, but not limited to:

·         SLCs

·         Exhibition

·         Assemblies (CDs)

·         Athletic events

Further updates and more detailed information will be provided soon. We understand this may cause disappointment and inconvenience. However, our first priority is the safety and health of our students and staff.
Thank you for understanding,
Veronica Rodriguez
