Week 9 Update – Thank you, Testing, Skating at the park, FAFSA Workshop, Hiring Info Session…

Thank you for coming to SLCs!

Designers – we are so impressed with the incredibly high attendance at SLCs this fall. Over 94% of DVD families attended an SLC with their student! Thank you for your continual dedication and support to your students’ education. We are so grateful for your involvement in our school community as you help us grow and strengthen our programs each year.

New Del Aire Park Regulations around Skateboarding

Students and families, we wanted to make you aware of the new rules being enforced by Del Aire Park.  They have recently posted a sign that states “No Smoking or Skating in the Park.”  We know that many of our students use before/after school time to skateboard in that area so we wanted to make you fully informed to avoid any future conflict or consequences with the Sheriff’s Department. An LA County Sheriff’s deputy communicated to our park supervision staff this morning that any student seen skateboarding in the park in the future would be given a citation.

Upcoming Testing

Juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 19 (practice packets were received today).  Sophomores will be taking the Practice ACT that same day for baseline data.

It’s that time of year again!  Old Navy is doing informational sessions and interviews next week to hire for their seasonal positions.  Students can attend an info session with an Old Navy manager next week on Tuesday, Oct. 11th in Mr. Barclay’s Room at LUNCH.

This is a great opportunity for students of all grade levels to attend and become familiar with the college process and to pick up information and learn more about the variety of colleges available to them.

Student pictures are ready for purchase!

DVD is blessed to have a professional photographer, Stacee Lianna, who captures our students’ work at DVD throughout the year, and now she is helping DVD with a special offer: your purchase of your students’ photos is deducted against the cost of her being our school’s professional photographer for the year – which makes this pretty much the best fundraiser EVER. You can help support DVD by purchasing pictures of your OWN KID! It’s a win-win!

You can view and purchase your child’s photo at https://staceelianna.smugmug.com/DaVinciSchools/DVD-2016-Picture-Day. The students are in the folder of their Advisory teacher, and the password to the folder is the name of their advisory teacher (case sensitive) with the room number of their classroom (for example, “Martin202”).

Your kids are changing fast! Buy the photos today!

Safety Update

DVD, we wanted to let you know that there was an Instagram page created sometime on Monday evening called “South Bay Clowns”, imitating something that started in South Carolina a few weeks ago, that shows images of 6 south bay high schools (DV’s logo is shown, but no photos of the actual schools) in what appears to be some sort of threat. A few students were talking about the account today at school, so we wanted to let everyone know how we have addressed and evaluated the situation. We do not see any threat to DVD or any of the Da Vinci Schools.

We at DVD became aware of the Instagram account yesterday (Tuesday) morning, and together with the other DV Principals we immediately contacted Instagram to report the page as being in violation of their user policy to have it removed.  We also spoke with the LA Sherriff and Hawthorne Police Department. All law enforcement told us that they did not feel it was a credible or specific threat and assured us they would be stepping up their presence and patrol of their school campuses. They will also keep us informed of any new information they receive.  We will keep you informed should anything new arise and do everything we can to continue to keep the campus safe.
