How can we make a difference in the lives of teens who are going through the refugee, migrant, immigrant experience?
Da Vinci Design 9th grade students used this question as a lens in each of their classes to study the lives and journeys of people going through these experiences. Students read novels and studied various groups of people who have gone through the refugee, migrant, immigrant experience in their English classes and then interviewed an immigrant in Spanish class to gain first-hand knowledge about the type of journey that they made. Students used this knowledge to create artwork to answer the question: “How can we use art to influence our views and understanding of the world?”
Students then painted their artwork on the bottom of skateboards that they made from scratch in their physics class, while learning the physics and engineering of skateboarding. Lastly, the students used their math knowledge to create sales proposals for the price of the skateboards and predicted the profits that DVD could donate to their chosen non-profit.
There are only two weeks left in the first semester! POLs begin next Thursday. The schedule for the week and POL grade level schedules are posted below. Please take a few minutes to read the following letter regarding POLs: POL info Letter for Families DVD Fall 2019
One way that we show appreciation for our teachers during POLs is keeping them fed and caffeinated. And we would love your help! Da Vinci is once again offering a SAT/ACT Prep course to its students through PJ Test Prep, a small Test Prep and Tutoring company based in the south bay. They have been in business since 2005 and have been offering SAT/ACT prep with Da Vinci for 5 years and they do a great job!
The course, open to students from all DV high schools, will be 5 days over winter break from Monday January 6th to Friday January 10th, from 10:00am-12:30pm, with a practice test on Wednesday 1/8 from 10:00am-2:00pm. Students are expected to attend all 5 days. The course, normally valued at $500, costs only $100 per student.
After signing up at https://tinyurl.com/Winter2019TestPrep, students pay the $100 course fee to their school’s office to secure their spot. Please make checks out to “Da Vinci Schools” and write “ACT Test Prep” on the memo line.
These tests are critical for college entrance! This is a very wise investment of time and money!
